For scooters up to 125cc: You need an A1, A2, or A motorcycle licence. A standard car licence (Category B) alone is not sufficient for scooters in Greece, regardless of what you may have been told elsewhere.

For scooters 150cc–200cc: You need an A2 or full A motorcycle licence. These models offer more power for longer island runs.

Always carry your original licence — not a photocopy — and make sure it clearly shows the relevant motorcycle category.

Best Scooter Routes on Santorini

1. Fira → Kamari Beach — A quick 10-minute ride on easy, flat roads. Perfect for a morning swim.

2. Fira → Perissa Black Sand Beach — 15 minutes through volcanic countryside. Park on the promenade and walk to the shore.

3. Caldera Road (Fira → Oia) — Doable on a scooter but requires confidence. The bends are sharp, traffic can be slow-moving in summer, and there are no guardrails on the drop side.

4. Akrotiri Village → Lighthouse — A beautiful late-afternoon ride ending at Santorini's most scenic sunset point — far fewer people than Oia.

5. Megalochori → Pyrgos Villages Loop — Quiet roads through wine country, connecting two of Santorini's most beautiful traditional villages.

When Is the Best Time to Ride?

The best months for scooter riding in Santorini are May, June, September, and October — warm and sunny but not punishingly hot, and roads are quieter. July and August are the hottest months; ride early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak sun. If you're visiting during Greek Easter (April 2026), morning and evening rides in the villages are magical.
