Rent a Buggy in Santorini: Things You Need to Know

20 January 20268 min read

Planning to rent a buggy in Santorini? Here's everything you should know — licence requirements, the best buggies for the island's terrain, top routes, and practical tips for an unforgettable ride.

Renting a Buggy in Santorini: The Complete Guide

Buggies have become one of the most popular ways to explore Santorini. With a steering wheel, roll cage, and side-by-side seating, they combine the open-air thrill of a quad with the stability and comfort of a car. Whether you're cruising the caldera road or heading to the beach, a buggy turns every journey into an adventure.

What Exactly Is a Buggy?

A buggy (also called a side-by-side or UTV) is a two-seat vehicle with:

  • A steering wheel (not handlebars like a quad)
  • A roll cage for safety
  • Side-by-side seating for driver and passenger
  • Road-legal registration for public roads in Greece

    Do I Need a Licence?

Yes — a standard car licence (Category B) is required for all buggies. This applies to both EU and international driving licences. Unlike quads, there is no motorcycle licence alternative for buggies.

    Best Routes for Buggies

    1. Fira → Oia Caldera Road — The classic 11 km scenic drive along the cliff edge. Spectacular in a buggy with the wind in your face.

    2. Akrotiri Loop — Head south-west to the archaeological site, Red Beach, and the lighthouse for sunset.

    3. Perissa & Perivolos Beach Run — Black sand beaches with beach bars and tavernas. Easy, flat roads perfect for buggies.

    4. Megalochori Wine Route — Tour three wineries in one afternoon through Santorini's rolling wine country.

    5. Pyrgos Hilltop Village — Climb to the medieval castle ruins for 360-degree panoramic views of the entire island.

    Safety Tips

  • Always wear your seatbelt. Buggies have roll cages but seatbelts are mandatory by law.
  • Drive slowly on the caldera road. Sharp turns, no guardrails, and steep drops require caution.
  • Watch for scooter and quad traffic. Smaller vehicles appear from side streets constantly around Fira.
  • Park only in designated areas. Buggies are wider than cars — make sure you fit in the space.
  • Return before dark if it's your first time. Some rural roads lack street lighting.
  • Manual vs Automatic

Our manual buggies (Joyner Python and Renli 1100cc) are powerful and exciting but require gear-shift confidence on Santorini's hilly terrain. If you prefer an easier ride, choose the Renli 2025 Automatic, CF SSV Z Force, or the flagship Polaris RZR — all fully automatic.
