Renting a Scooter in Santorini: Everything You Need to Know

Scooters are the most affordable and nimble way to explore Santorini. They slip through narrow village streets, park anywhere, and let you feel the warm Aegean breeze as you cruise between beaches, wineries, and caldera viewpoints.

Licence Requirements

For scooters up to 125cc: You need an A1, A2, or A motorcycle licence. A standard car licence (Category B) is not sufficient for scooters in Greece.

For scooters 150cc+: You need an A2 or A motorcycle licence. These models are more powerful and require a higher licence category.

Always carry your original licence (not a photocopy) and make sure it clearly shows the motorcycle category.

Best Scooter Routes on Santorini

1. Fira → Kamari Beach — A quick 10-minute ride on easy, flat roads. Perfect for a morning beach run.

2. Fira → Perissa Beach — 15 minutes through scenic countryside. Park on the promenade and walk to the sand.

3. Caldera Road (Fira → Oia) — Doable on a scooter but requires confidence. Winding with no guardrails.

4. Akrotiri Village → Lighthouse — A beautiful late-afternoon ride ending at Santorini's best sunset spot.

5. Megalochori → Pyrgos Villages — Explore Santorini's traditional villages and wine country on quiet roads.

Safety Tips for Scooter Riders

  • Wear a helmet at all times. It's the law, and the fine for riding without one is steep.
  • Avoid the caldera road at night. No street lighting and sharp drop-offs make it dangerous after dark.
  • Watch for sand on the road. Volcanic sand can accumulate on bends, especially near beaches.
  • Use sunscreen. Riding a scooter in the Santorini sun means constant UV exposure — protect your arms and legs.
  • Lock your scooter. Use the steering lock and the cable lock we provide with every rental.
  • When to Ride

The best months for scooter riding in Santorini are May through October. July and August are hottest — ride early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak sun. September and October offer perfect conditions with warm weather and fewer tourists on the roads.
