Why an ATV Is the Best Way to Explore Santorini

Santorini isn't just caldera sunsets and blue domes — there's a wild, volcanic side that most visitors miss entirely. Hidden beaches tucked behind pumice cliffs, dirt trails threading through vineyards, and clifftop viewpoints with zero tourists. An ATV is the key that unlocks all of it.

We started Rent Me Love Me in Akrotiri in 2014 because we grew up riding these trails ourselves. When you rent a quad bike from us, you're getting local knowledge baked into the experience: we'll circle the best routes on your map, tell you where to park at Red Beach to skip the crowds, and point you to the sunset spot the locals use instead of Oia.

The full island loop — Fira → Oia → Pyrgos → Akrotiri → Red Beach → Perissa → Kamari → Fira — is about 40 km and takes 2–3 hours with stops. On a rented ATV, you can pull over anywhere: a roadside chapel, a vineyard, a volcanic outcrop with views of Nea Kameni. That's the freedom a quad bike gives you in Santorini.

CF MOTO 450cc — Built for Santorini's Volcanic Terrain

Our fleet runs the CF MOTO 450cc — a proper adventure quad, not a tourist toy:

This engine is the sweet spot for Santorini: enough power for the steep caldera climbs, enough control for the narrow village streets, and enough suspension for the unpaved shortcuts to beaches like Vlychada and Red Beach. When we say our ATVs handle everything on the island, we mean it — we ride them ourselves.

Quick Guide

  • Automatic CVT transmission — no gears, just twist-and-go fun
  • 450cc single-cylinder — climbs the Athinios Port switchbacks without breaking a sweat
  • Independent dual A-arm suspension — smooths out volcanic gravel, potholes, and rough beach access roads
  • Certified for 1–2 riders depending on model
  • Integrated storage rack — helmets, bags, beach gear, all sorted

Our Favourite ATV Routes in Santorini

Red Beach via the Back Way — Skip the car park. From Akrotiri, take the gravel trail that descends past the ancient ruins. Your ATV handles it easily where rental cars hesitate. Park above the cliffs for the best view of the red volcanic rock against turquoise water.

Vlychada & the Moon Landscape — Ride south to Santorini's strangest beach: towering eroded white pumice cliffs that look like another planet. The final stretch is rough gravel — perfect ATV territory. Continue along the coast to discover Santorini's quietest swimming spots.

Akrotiri Lighthouse Sunset Run — Our home turf. Head to the southwestern tip for Santorini's most dramatic sunset — rivalling Oia, but without the crowds. Paved road, easy ride, and you can park right at the lighthouse. Bring a cold drink and stay for the afterglow.

Pyrgos Hilltop Adventure — Ride up to the medieval fortress village of Pyrgos for 360° views of the entire island. The narrow streets were made for ATVs — no car could navigate them this easily. Stop at a rooftop café and take in the caldera, the volcano, and the Aegean stretching to Crete.

Mesa Vouno & Ancient Thera — From Kamari, climb the exposed switchback road to the hilltop ruins. Steep, winding, and exhilarating — with views over both coasts of Santorini at the summit. One of the most rewarding rides on the island.

ATV Licence, Safety & Tips for Santorini

A standard car licence (EU Category B) covers our CF MOTO 450cc ATVs. International visitors need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home licence.

Riding tips from the locals: • Always wear the helmet we give you — Greek police patrol the caldera road and fines are steep • Minimum rider age: 18 with a valid licence • Volcanic pumice gravel is loose and slippery — ease off the throttle on unpaved sections, especially near beaches • The caldera road between Fira and Oia has steep drop-offs with no guardrails — ride focused and stay in your lane • Fill up in Fira, at the airport road petrol station, or in Emporio before heading south — no fuel on the south coast • Wind: Santorini's Meltemi can blow hard in July–August. A quad bike handles it better than a scooter, but lean into crosswinds on exposed stretches • We include full insurance and roadside assistance with every rental — ride with peace of mind
