Most roads are paved and in good condition, but they are often narrow with tight turns near caldera villages like Fira, Imerovigli, and Oia. Plan an extra 10-15 minutes for sunset hours, when traffic builds up and parking fills quickly.

If you are arriving by ferry, the Athinios climb is the only section that feels demanding for first-time visitors. Take it slow, keep distance from buses, and use lower gears on descents. For day trips, leave early for beaches and wineries to avoid midday congestion.
